In our world and society today, there are many people that consistently are appearing in the media time and time again, and more often than not for bad reasons. A prominent group that fits this description in today's society would be the Westboro Baptist Church. This church, while claiming to be a Christian denomination, acts unlike any other religious organization. They are the most hateful, spiteful, immoral, group of people that I have ever come across in my entire life. The Westboro Baptist Church has many different viewpoints that many people find extremely offensive; namely their acts of discrimination against homosexuals and soldiers. The Westboro Baptist Church orginated from Topeka, Kansas who call themselves a Christian denominations, but obviously do not have any understanding of the message of Christianity. They are a very hateful group, especially towards gays and soldiers, saying that the Bible states that God hates both of these groups, which is blatantly wrong. Their conduct towards American soldiers, both dead and alive, is particularly disturbing. They repeatedly picket American soldiers' funerals, justifying this by trying to say they are "warning people that if they do not repent, they too will perish." They also say that God is killing these soldiers as punishment method. I find these actions revolting. Men and women who are giving their lives overseas to protect our freedom, as both Americans and people, are coming back to this country to be picketed against and used to "teach a lesson." The WBC uses their "right" to speak their beliefs and continue to picket military funerals across the country. What really gets me is their own blatant stupidity; were it not for these soldiers giving their lives and protecting our rights as Americans, they would not be able to get away with the horrid stunts they pull. The moral thing to do would be to respect and thank these soldiers for what they have done, and to treat them with the human dignity that they deserve. The reaction for mostly everyone exposed to this kind of ignorance is the same; they completely reject and protest these actions the same way I have. Many go to the protests with signs and pickets that mock and deny the messages of the WBC. Some others have even taken to such extremes as threatening the WBC, and even bombing their houses. While I would not take it to such a serious level, the hatred of the WBC must be stopped, and anyone who calls themselves a Christian should always treat others with the common charity that they deserve.
